Wind conditions on Lake Como

S & uuml; dwind Breva
In the northern part of Lake Como, the lake is usually calm until around 11 a.m.
The thermal south wind Breva blows from midday, most reliably when the weather is stable. It usually reaches around 4 wind forces and is strongest in the area of Domaso or the Piona monastery opposite.
Towards afternoon the wind has reached its peak, towards evening the wind flattens out. However, if the nights don't cool down sufficiently in midsummer, the Breva can easily drop out.

North wind Tivano
The north wind Tivano is already blowing early ; h in the morning, often stronger than the Breva, and is usually strongest in the south of the lake near Lecco. The Tivano (Nordf & ouml; hn) actually arises when there is a large difference in air pressure between the northern side of the Alps (low pressure equals bad weather) versus the southern side of the Alps (high pressure equals beautiful weather).
The wind goes away from the land towards Como/Lecco, mostly like a boulder with enormous speed and in the middle of the lake with high waves. This wind is often underestimated and can be dangerous. With smaller boats you can hardly get against this wind!

In the middle of Lake Como, Rezzonico and Dervio are good north wind spots.

The best spots are in the north of Lake Como between Gera Lario and Colico at the Adda estuary.
