1829 Heinrich Mylius bought a villa on a hill near Menaggio, which has been enlarged and embellished over time to make it more and more rich to create space for the nascent art collection with its pictures, statues and valuable furniture. In this way he was able to create a museum house that, thanks to the care taken by his descendants, the Vigoni, is still preserved and admired today. The special atmosphere of the villa is provided not only by the large family pictures and the antique furniture, but also by objects of everyday use, such as clocks, cutlery, linen or children's toys. Everything is reminiscent of the last century. The extensive English park, designed and executed by Giuseppe Balzaretto, surrounds the villa and thus forms a natural setting of rare beauty; Orchids, centuries-old trees, viewpoints and exotic scents create a unique atmosphere. The paths are lined with statues.
A small neoclassical temple with works by Thorvaldsen and Marchesi rises on a small hill as a memorial to Giulio, Heinrich Mylius' only son who died early.
In 1983 Don Ignazio Vigoni Medici di Marignano, the last childless descendant of a rich German-Italian family, bequeathed his property on Lake Como to the Federal Republic of Germany.
Meanwhile, the villa is owned by the Federal Republic of Germany and is now the seat of a cultural center Organization that organizes high-level meetings.
