Villa Carlotta was built as a summer residence at the instigation of the Marquis Giorgio Clerici at the end of the 17th century. The result was an impressive building with an Italian garden surrounded by statues, stairs and fountains. But it was Gian Battista Sommariva, the next owner, who made the villa flourish. He wanted to transform part of the garden into a romantic park and to embellish the house with numerous pieces of art by artists such as Canova, Thorvaldsen and Hayez.
Princess Marianne von Nassau gave her daughter Charlotte the villa as a bridal gift for her wedding to Georg Crown Prince of Saxony-Meiningen in the middle of the 19th century. The merit of the Sachsen-Meiningen was the creation and development of a park landscape of international renown.
The Botanical Garden is famous for the flowers of over 150 species of rhododendrons and azaleas in spring. A visit is worthwhile in every season. Camellia hedges, southern giant ferns, palm trees, tropical plants, rare old conifers and a bamboo garden grow and thrive in the villa's garden. At the same time, the garden offers a wonderful view of the central part of Lake Como.
