The Swiss Customs Museum is entirely dedicated to the fascinating subject of "smuggling". It shows how smugglers went about their "business" at great risk in the formerly economically poor area. Here you can find a lot of information about the living conditions, dangers, troubles, the ingenuity of smugglers and border guards and much more. .
The first customs museum was set up in 1935 in an old customs house on Lake Lugano. The museum was completely renovated in 1994, as a faithful reconstruction of a border guard from the late 19th century. Modern border surveillance systems are also presented with video and photographs, such as infrared devices for the night watch and systems for capturing counterfeit identity documents.
The Swiss Customs Museum can be reached by ship ( Departure daily at 1 p.m. from Lugano-Giardino). Open from April to October, Monday- Sunday from 1.30 p.m. to 5.30 p.m. From Lugano you can walk to Gandria. to reach. The Olive Trail from Castagnola offers this possibility.
