It's now 20 years since George Clooney bought Villa Oleandra, an Art Nouveau building in Laglio on the shores of Lake Como: that's what it's worth today.
Summer has now officially begun and with it the "exodus" of Hollywood stars to their Italian retreats. In fact, many celebrities have chosen Italy for their vacations over the years. So does George Clooney, who has lived in Laglio on the shores of Lake Como for 20 years.
VILLA OLEANDRA, WHERE GEORGE CLOONEY'S HOME IS
The American star was struck by Villa Oleandra, a 1700 Art Nouveau building located on the western shore of Lake Como, a complex whose entrance is directly on Via Vecchia Regina, one winding road that runs along the lake shore. Clooney spends a lot of time there with his wife Amal and their children Alexander and Emma and is now an honorary citizen of Laglio, a town with fewer than 1,000 inhabitants. But what is the history of Villa Oleandra?
THE HISTORY OF VILLA OLEANDRA
Its existence is documented by cadastral maps from 1720, but in a smaller version than today. In the course of the following century the property changed several times. The first changes and extensions were made in 1834 by members of the Stoppani family, who first merged the building with the surrounding land. In 1868 the work was completed by the Antongini family and in 1877 the building, now according to the current plan and now a villa, was sold to the Vitali family.
At the beginning of the 20th century, Villa Oleandra passed into the hands of American owners. The most famous is John Heinz, the billionaire behind the well-known sauce brand, and it was his heirs who made Clooney an honorary citizen of Laglio. According to legend, the actor stranded on his motorbike just a few steps from the gates of the villa during a tour of the Alps in 2002. The owners of Villa Oleandra, from which Clooney was struck by lightning, helped him.HOW MUCH DOES VILLA OLEANDRA COST?
In love with the location and the panorama of Villa Oleandra, Clooney decided to buy it. The deal ended for 10 million euros, and since then the actor has never regretted the decision, on the contrary, he has invested in works to further improve the mansion. Numerous stars and celebrities have visited Villa Oleandra including super supermodel Cindy Crawford and her husband Rande Gerber, great friends of Clooney and also our Elisabetta Canalis at the time of her relationship with the star.
After initial "distrust" due to media hype, residents welcomed Clooney as one of their number, appreciating the economic impact of the presence of such an illustrious fellow citizen. For his part, the actor and director repeatedly returned praise for the villa and the territory. He also generously donated to the damage caused by the 2021 flood that devastated part of Laglio.
Today, thanks to renovations (Clooney also bought the nearby Villa Margherita) and the presence of its illustrious guests, Villa Oleandra is worth ten times the price the actor paid 20 years ago.
